James, Naveen and Jason
Cllr James Appleby, Cllr Naveen Samrat and Cllr Jason Stone are your Liberal Democrat Councillors in North Cheam. They were first elected in 2026.
Together, they are fighting hard for the community and delivering on your priorities. They back the hard work the local Lib Dem council and Luke Taylor MP have been doing to secure new investment in our high streets, keep our borough one of the safest places to live in the country and make sure that help is available to families struggling with the cost of living crisis.
They are on hand to tackle any concerns you might have about issues the local council is responsible for in your local area.
Meet the team…
James is a computer programmer who has lived in Sutton for over 10 years. He is passionate about protecting the local area, and has served as ward co-ordinator for a local Neighbourhood Watch group. He believes that everyone should feel safe in their area - and that it’s the foundation of a strong community.
James also believes that our heritage and history is one of the things that makes our area special - and supports efforts not just to protect local historic sites but also to develop a wider, stronger cultural offer in Sutton so that everyone can access, enjoy and learn from the rich history in our area.
Naveen has lived in Sutton for over 14 years and has two children in local schools. With strong roots in the community, he understands the importance of safe streets, good schools, protected parks, and reliable local services, and is committed to supporting a responsive Council that truly listens to residents.
Previously Head of IT Security in the UK Civil Service, Naveen safeguarded systems underpinning public finances and essential government operations. He brings this public-service mindset to his local work and is committed to tackling anti-social behaviour, supporting visible community policing, and helping protect residents from scams and emerging threats.
Naveen runs the not-for-profit Sutton Tech Kids and actively supports local cultural and charitable initiatives. He is passionate about strengthening community ties, protecting essential services, and ensuring Sutton remains a safe, inclusive, and thriving place for families.
Jason has lived in North Cheam for over 10 years with his wife and two daughters, who attend local schools. As a local parent, he is passionate about road safety, especially for children. He campaigned for the school street outside Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy, helping to control it until cameras were installed, and is now campaigning for a new zebra crossing to be installed on Windsor Avenue nearby.
For three years now, he has planted flower bulbs around the Cheam Park Farm estate as part of CHAPRA'S initiative, and in his spare time loves to play volleyball - he was President of Wimbledon Volleyball Club for five years until 2010.
