Lib Dems oppose incinerator expansion

2 Mar 2023

Lib Dem-run Sutton Council has opposed an application to expand the amount of waste processed at the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).

Cllr Barry Lewis, Sutton Lib Dem’s Environment Spokesperson said:

“We have urged the Environment Agency to reject Viridor’s application.

“The amount of waste being produced in Sutton is falling and the area around the ERF just isn’t designed to deal with the extra waste Viridor’s application would allow.

“While the incinerator is an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective way of treating our household rubbish, we are clear that any expansion would be unnecessary.”
