Lib Dem-run Sutton Council is calling on the Government to provide more funding to fix potholes on the borough's roads.

The Government recently announced an additional £200 million for local councils to tackle the country’s worsening pothole pandemic, but none of this funding has been allocated to Sutton or any other London authority.

This comes as a report found that there is a massive £1.59 billion backlog in highway maintenance in London.

Cllr Barry Lewis, Sutton Lib Dems' Transport Spokesperson, said:

"The Conservative Government has shown its true colours – supporting Sutton clearly isn’t a priority for them. We’re being left behind and the condition of our roads is getting worse.

"I have written to the Minister for London - who is one of our local MPs and is meant to be standing up for us - to express our disappointment and urge him to get the Government to reconsider its decision. The safety of local residents is our top priority for us, and potholes pose a significant risk to all road users.

"Despite Sutton being one of the fastest boroughs for fixing potholes, we need the Government to recognise the urgent need for more funding so that we can continue to keep our roads safe and in good condition.

"Sutton Council is committed to doing its part, but we need the Government to step up and do its job."

The Council is also asking local residents to report any potholes they come across to help prioritise repairs and ensure the safety of all road users. Residents can do so at www.sutton.gov.uk/report-an-issue.
