Dean backs Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson in the introduction of Kinship Care Bill
Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson introduces Kinship Care Bill to support families and friends who care for a child.
The Kinship Care Bill looks to support carers who are often overlooked. Kinship carers are friends and family members who step up for a child in crisis and provide them with a loving home, keeping them out of the care system.
The Kinship charity found that 61% of kinship carers were worried about their financial situation in 2021. The current cost-of-living crisis will only make this worse.
If the bill passes Munira will introduce:
- Weekly allowances for kinship carers, just as foster carers get.
- Proper parental leave when they first welcome in a child.
- Extra funding to ensure the children thrive in school.
Bobby Dean, who is campaigning to be Carshalton and Wallington’s next MP, said:
“This is a fantastic bill and I’m proud to see my Liberal Democrat colleague Munira Wilson introducing it.
“It is vital we provide support to the members of our community who make massive personal sacrifices to care for a loved one.
“We can do so much more for family looking after family.”
